La Police nationale congolaise (PNC) a procédé le mercredi 7 août 2024, à la présentation publique de 221 personnes arrêtées pour leur implication dans les incidents violents survenus au Palais du Peuple à Kinshasa lors du dépôt de candidatures au Sénat le 6 août. La majorité des personnes arrêtées sont identifiées comme des militants de l’Union pour la Démocratie et le Progrès Social (UDPS), le parti au pouvoir.
Sous la supervision du commissaire divisionnaire adjoint Blaise Kilimbalimba, les individus ont été présentés aux médias et au public. Le commissaire a tenu à rassurer sur la sécurisation renforcée du Palais du Peuple, affirmant que seules les personnes autorisées, notamment les sénateurs, pourront accéder à l’hémicycle le jour de l’élection du bureau définitif du Sénat.
Ces violences sont le reflet de la crise interne au sein de l’UDPS, où deux factions s’opposent. L’une, favorable au secrétaire général Augustin Kabuya, a accompagné la candidature d’Idrissa Afani Mangala à la présidence du Sénat. L’autre, opposée à Kabuya, a tenté de perturber ce processus, entraînant des affrontements qui ont endommagé plusieurs installations du Palais du Peuple.
Les forces de l’ordre ont dû intervenir en tirant des coups de sommation pour disperser les militants, causant plusieurs blessés et des destructions matérielles. Ces événements ont perturbé les activités parlementaires et mis en lumière les tensions croissantes au sein du parti présidentiel.
