USAID to the rescue of REGIDESO in Goma: A new era for access to drinking water

A glimmer of hope has been lit for the inhabitants of Goma, who have been facing a shortage of drinking water for years, REGIDESO has been working tirelessly to resolve this issue. It is in this context that a team of American engineers from USAID, led by Angela Thérèse, made a working visit to the REGIDESO headquarters this Monday, September 30, 2024.

The objective? To assess the city’s water needs and implement sustainable solutions.

This visit marks a new step in the collaboration between the United States and the Democratic Republic of Congo to improve the living conditions of the populations. The Regional Director of REGIDESO, David Angoyo, welcomed this initiative, emphasizing that this is the second meeting with Thérèse’s team, responsible for implementing this vast American program.

Goma, a tourist city plagued by security instability, has seen its population double in recent years. Multiple volcanic eruptions and conflicts have weakened infrastructure and exacerbated water shortages. Despite these challenges, REGIDESO strives to provide an essential public service, but the needs remain immense.

Through this partnership, REGIDESO will be able to benefit from technical and financial expertise to improve its water distribution system. One of the flagship projects announced by USAID is the construction of a new pumping station, a first for Goma. This infrastructure will significantly increase the production and distribution of drinking water.

David Angoyo wanted to reassure the population:  » With the arrival of USAID, we are confident that the issue of drinking water will soon be resolved. We invite the population to be patient, the results of this partnership will be visible in the months to come. »

It should be recalled that USAID’s commitment to the DRC is not new. Last August, an American delegation made an in-depth visit to REGIDESO facilities in Goma to assess needs. This new mission confirms the United States’ desire to support sustainable development in the DRC.
